San'a View of the City

If you’ve followed the story of the bombs sent in packages from Yemen to the United States, you can’t help but wonder about a few things.

David Cameron says according to the BBC:

Home Secretary Theresa May has confirmed that a device sent from Yemen and found on a US-bound cargo plane was a bomb.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he believed the device was designed to explode on board the aircraft.

Obviously, the didn’t explode or were intercepted before they could, but if that is forensically secured knowledge, why then were they addressed to Jewish synagogues in Chicago and why are some still saying the synagogues were the target? As the New York Times does today, for example:

CHICAGO — Even to a block that is arguably one of the safest and most secure in the country, the news that two parcels containing explosives were shipped from Yemen and addressed to synagogues or Jewish community centers in the city gave some residents pause on Saturday.

[..]

Reports that Chicago-area synagogues or Jewish community centers were likely targets of a terrorist attack and the return of President Obama to his hometown this weekend brought attention to the city’s security.

You can’t have it both ways. The bombs either were designed to explode on the planes, or were targeted at the Jewish synagogues they were addressed to, but it can’t be both.

There is more that doesn’t add up – at least not yet. In the Berner Zeitung, a Swiss newspaper, we read today:

A human rights organisation in Yemen doesn’t believe that the young woman detained in relation with the packets containing explosives and addressed to the United States have anything to do with it. He didn’t believe in the official version, according to which the accused had left here mobile number on the packet slips, Abdel Rahmane of the organisation Hood told APF on Sunday. ”We know for sure that al-Qaeda never leaves traces”.

[...]

In the mean time the website of one of the synagogues, to which the packages from Yemen are believed to have been addressed, is said to have been visited lately often by a user from Egypt. The web-admistrator of the synagogue had noticed recently that the website had been visited 83 times in one day by someone from Egypt, as the Wall Street Journal wrote, citing the Rabbi of the Emmanuel community in Chicago, Michael Zedek.

It seems the Rabbi is very well-informed as well, as he told the same newspaper that according to his information, there were four and not two package bombs addressed to synagogues in Chicago. How does he know? From a source. Ok, thanks for sharing.

As of today, neither the FBI nor the DOJ have made official statements available on their respective websites, I guess that’s because they are busy investigating and don’t have time to release rumours, but then, I may be deluded because that would assume that they are not somehow politically influenced. The FBI, by the way, or its Joint Terrorism Task Force to be more precise, is rumoured by PressTV to have stated that “the two packages intercepted in Britain en route to the US contain no explosives”. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the original of that FBI statement, but it would fit in well with earlier press reports that this was a dry run of sorts – you wouldn’t put use real explosives in a dry run, would you. From CBS News Interactive:

NEW YORK (WJZ/AP) ― Investigators are probing whether a string of suspicious packages was a dry run for a mail bomb blot, according to a U.S. official.

A suspicious package containing a toner cartridge with wires and powder was found during routine screening of cargo in the United Kingdom, prompting authorities to scour three planes and a truck in the United States on Friday.

Two planes were searched in Philadelphia along with one in Newark, N.J. Two delivery trucks were also examined in New York City. No explosives were found in either the U.S. or the U.K.
The early focus of the investigation centers on Yemen. A Joint Terrorism Task Force source tells CBS News that investigators are looking for between 10-20 packages shipped out of the UPS office in Sanna, Yemen.

So, the bottom line so far is that it is not clear what exactly happened, what was supposed to happen and who was behind if – if anything was supposed to happen at all. That doesn’t keep Janet Napolitano to state with confidence that:

The parcel bombs sent from Yemen destined for the United States have hallmarks of the militant group al Qaeda or its affiliate al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on Saturday.

“I think we would agree with that, that it does contain all the hallmarks of al Qaeda and in particular al Qaeda AP,” she said in an interview on ABC News.

Please note the “I think we would agree”, which indicates that there are no facts available and that her statement is a foregone conclusion and not the result of any forensic investigation by law enforcement. We are also told by Reuters, that a Saudi-born bombmaker is being ‘eyed’ by the US as the likely responsible behind these bombs and the Christmas attack of 2009. The Reuters article even links to a Saudi provided list of names of its citizens, which are wanted as extremists. Curiously, Osama bin Laden hasn’t made it onto that list -at least as far as I can tell. Maybe under another name?

The New York Times, in the meantime, points out the plot had been foiled because of Saudi tips:

For many in the West, Saudi Arabia remains better known as a source of terrorism than as a partner in defeating it. It is the birthplace of Osama bin Laden and 15 of the 19 hijackers in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Yet Western intelligence officials say the Saudis’ own experience with jihadists has helped them develop powerful surveillance tools and a broad network of informers that has become increasingly important in the global battle against terrorism.

This month, Saudi intelligence warned of a possible terrorist attack in France by Al Qaeda’s branch in the Arabian Peninsula. The Saudis have brought similar intelligence reports about imminent threats to at least two other European countries in the past few years, and have played an important role in identifying terrorists in Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia and Kuwait, according to Saudi and Western intelligence officials.

“This latest role is one in a series of Saudi intelligence contributions,” said Thomas Hegghammer, a research fellow at the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment. “They can be helpful because so much is going on in their backyard, and because they have a limitless budget to develop their abilities.”

[...]

Saudi Arabia’s counterterrorism program differs from its Western counterparts in striking ways. It includes a familiar “hard” element of commando teams that kill terrorists, along with vastly expanded surveillance. The streets of major Saudi cities are continuously watched by cameras, and most Internet traffic goes through a central point that facilitates monitoring.

But the program also has a softer side aimed at re-educating jihadists and weaving them back into Saudi society. The government runs a rehabilitation program for terrorists, including art therapy and efforts to find jobs and wives for the former convicts. The program suffered an embarrassment last year when two of its graduates, who had also been in Guantánamo, fled the country and became leading figures in Al Qaeda’s Arabian branch.

You could also phrase the Saudi role this way: First they create the terrorists and then they go after them with their vast intelligence and security resources. I wonder what the Saudi definition of extremist is anyway. It seems that another takeaway from this NYT piece is that Western societies could be much more successful in fighting their own homegrown extremism – Islamist and other – if they only just copied what Saudi Arabia does. I am sure that will work, as Saudi Arabia is a very authoritarian monarchy and Western country – or their elites – do strive to go into that same direction.

Two-year-old Gavin Tillman of Pass Christian, Mississippi, has been diagnosed with severe upper respiratory, sinus, and viral infections. His temperature has reached more than 39 degrees since September 15, yet his sicknesses continue to worsen.

His parents, some doctors, and environmental consultants believe the child’s ailments are linked to exposure to chemicals spilt by BP during its Gulf of Mexico oil disaster.

Gavin’s father, mother, and cousin, Shayleigh, are also facing serious health problems. Their symptoms are being experienced by many others living along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Widely banned toxic dispersants

Injected with at least 4.9 million barrels of oil during the BP oil disaster of last summer, the Gulf has suffered the largest accidental marine oil spill in history. Compounding the problem, BP has admitted to using at least 1.9 million gallons of widely banned toxic dispersants (one that has been banned in the UK), which according to chemist Bob Naman, create an even more toxic substance when mixed with crude oil. And dispersed, weathered oil continues to flow ashore daily.

Naman, who works at the Analytical Chemical Testing Lab in Mobile, Alabama, has been carrying out studies to search for the chemical markers of the dispersants BP used to both sink and break up its oil.

According to Naman, poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from this toxic mix are making people sick. PAHs contain compounds that have been identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic.

Fisherman across the four states most heavily affected by the oil disaster – Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida – have reported seeing BP spray dispersants from aircraft and boats offshore.

“The dispersants are being added to the water and are causing chemical compounds to become water soluble, which is then given off into the air, so it is coming down as rain, in addition to being in the water and beaches of these areas of the Gulf,” Naman added.

“I’m scared of what I’m finding. These cyclic compounds intermingle with the Corexit [dispersants] and generate other cyclic compounds that aren’t good. Many have double bonds, and many are on the EPA’s danger list. This is an unprecedented environmental catastrophe.”

Commercial fisherman Donny Matsler also lives in Alabama.

“I was with my friend Albert, and we were both slammed with exposure,” Matsler explained of his experience on August 5, referring to toxic chemicals he inhaled that he believes are associated with BP’s dispersants. “We both saw the clumps of white bubbles on the surface that we know come from the dispersed oil.”

It looks like what has been widely feared and predicted – outside the mainstream media, that is – is now materialising, as Rawstory wrote back in September 2010:

A major potential long-term health concern left in the wake of BP’s catastrophic oil spill is the nearly two million gallons of dispersant sprayed over and pumped into the Gulf, scientists say. Much of it was injected into the sea beneath its surface, which made both the amount used, and its use, unprecedented.

In interviews, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and FDA officials repeatedly told Raw Story that dispersant “does not bioaccumulate” in seafood and therefore is not toxic to humans. The two dispersants used during the oil spill, Corexit 9527 and Corexit 9500, contain many ingredients “found in common household products.” And even though there is still no chemical test to detect dispersant in Gulf seafood – though officials said one is coming very soon – sensory tests are effective down to one part per million.

The article goes on to point out that the officials later on admitted that their optimism wasn’t founded on scientifically proven knowledge at all, but never mind, everything is okay. While the concern about the food chain have been around for some time, there seems to be a more direct threat. I’ll repeat part of the paragraph from the Al Jazeera article cited above:

“The dispersants are being added to the water and are causing chemical compounds to become water soluble, which is then given off into the air, so it is coming down as rain, in addition to being in the water and beaches of these areas of the Gulf,” Naman added.

“I’m scared of what I’m finding. These cyclic compounds intermingle with the Corexit [dispersants] and generate other cyclic compounds that aren’t good. Many have double bonds, and many are on the EPA’s danger list. This is an unprecedented environmental catastrophe.”

Oil slick map

So, the toxic stuff will be in the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat. However, according to government, everything is okay. Nothing to see here, move on. I wonder if the prediction scientists made about the oil slick moving with the ocean currents also applies to this oil/water/dispersant mix?

The Belarussian parliament back in September had set the date for the presidential elections. As RIA Novosti communicated at the time:

The Parliament of Belarus on Tuesday set the presidential election in the country for December 19, 2010, reports RIA Novosti.

This decision was taken unanimously by parliamentarians.

Incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko had made it clear earlier that he would participate in the election, but this was not officially announced.

Now to participate in this election, potential candidates need to come up with at least 100’000 valid signatures supporting their candidature. Apparently, eleven candidates have achieved this, again as per RIA Novosti:

Eleven potential candiates handed over the required signatures to participate in the presidential elections of Belarus, Nikolai Lozovik, the secretary of the CEC (Central Election Commission) told RIA Novosti on Saturday. A potential candidate must collect at least 100,000 signatures in his support.

“In the first place is the current president, Alexander Lukashenko, who has handed over more than 1.1 million signatures”, said Lozovik.

He said that the second highest number of signatures to be handed over was from opposition author and writer Vladimir Neklayev, who arrived at more than 160 thousand signatures, followed by former Deputy Foreigne Minister of Belarus, Andrei Sannikov and the vice-president of the United Civil Party and well-known liberal economist Yaroslav Romanchuk with more than 150 thousand and 120 thousand signatures, respectively.

“All other candidates have handed over to the committee from 105 to 120 thousand signatures”, informed the secretary of the Belarus CEC.

The last presidential elections in Belarus were held on March 19, 2006 with Alexander Lukashenko getting 82.6% of the vote (source: Wikipedia). According to the OSCE the elections were “severely flawed due to arbitrary use of state power and restriction on basic rights”, as they wrote in a press release:

MINSK, 20 March, 2006 – The Belarusian presidential election on 19 March failed to meet OSCE commitments for democratic elections, despite the fact that voters were offered the potential for a genuine choice between four candidates.

Arbitrary use of state power and widespread detentions showed a disregard for the basic rights of freedom of assembly, association and expression, and raise doubts regarding the authorities’ willingness to tolerate political competition, concludes the OSCE Election Observation Mission in a statement issued today.

Over 500 international observers from 38 countries observed the voting and counting on behalf of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, PA.

“The Belarusian people deserve better. The courageous efforts of the opposition candidates to offer voters a genuine choice for president were obstructed by actions by state authorities,” said OSCE PA president Alcee Hastings, appointed by the OSCE Chairman-in-Office as the Special Co-ordinator for the short-term observers.

Well, let’s see how it goes this time. The Belarussian president, by the way has a 5 year term.

Apparently, the message with which the 33 miners in Chile signalled to the world that they are alive was written on a piece of paper and read “Estamos Bien En El Réfugio Los 33″ (The 33 are safe in the sanctuary) has been patented. Writes the Argentinian newspaper Los Andes:

The famous phrase “estamos bien en el refugio los 33″, written by one of the miners trapped in the mine San José as a signal of life 17 days after the collapse that trapped them, was entered into the registry of intellectual property of Chile to protect the author’s intellectual rights.

The little paper, written in block-letters with a red pen was exhibited these days by the President Sebastián Piñera, who since then has guarded it like an amulet.

The patent has been entered on the name of the miner who wrote the message, José Ojeda by Chilean writer and sociologist Pablo Huneeus who has done so on request of the former. “My motivation to register the phrase was to see that the president of the Republic not pocket the creation of a worker”, said Huneeus. He further thinks that the president needs to return the paper to the author, since right now he was utilising a stolen property. The president seems to have the view that this creation belongs to all Chileans.

It seems that text and its appearance are now patented. This means no commercialising on T-shirts, mugs, towels or the like without permission of the patent holder.

On Friday, 22.10.2010, Stephan Harper, the Canadian Prime Minister on his way to the Sommet de la francophonie in Montreux stopped over in Bern for an official visit. According to the Swiss government a protocol was signed amending the Double Taxation Agreement between both countries and it was announced that the bilateral aviation agreement would be expanded:

The discussions served as an opportunity to take stock of bilateral relations between the two countries, which have been enhanced in the
economic field following the entry into force in July 2009 of the free trade agreement between Canada and EFTA. The subjects of international
governance and new rules and standards for finance and trade were also raised. Canada currently chairs the G8 and in June hosted the G20 Summit
in Toronto. Both countries work closely with the International Organisation of La Francophonie; the visit took place on the eve of the
opening of its XIII summit at which Canada will hand over the chair to Switzerland. The partners also discussed regional issues and reform of
the United Nations.

The official discussions concluded with the signing of a protocol amending the double taxation agreement by Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf
Merz and Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen’s Privy Council and Minister for La Francophonie. The
amended agreement is expected to come into effect in 2012.

President Doris Leuthard and Prime Minister Stephen Harper also announced the conclusion of negotiations on updating and expanding the
1975 bilateral aviation agreement between Switzerland and Canada. The main effects of the revised agreement will be to liberalise tariffs and
introduce traffic rights for stopovers and destinations via the two countries. The amendments will benefit passengers, airports, airlines
and freight carriers, as well as general economic relations between Switzerland and Canada.

Details about the double taxation agreement can be found here, and the press release of the Canadian government is here.

The 23rd Sommet de la francophonie takes places from Friday, October 22 to Sunday, October 24 in Montreux, which is on lakefront of Lac Léman.

Yes, maybe Cuba can finance some PACs too, or would that be considered illegal because Cuba is supposedly socialist and does not support the corporatist agenda like the multinational do? In principle, if the American Chamber of Commerce can with Bahraini money support its activities in the US elections, why can’t Cuba support a Socialist agenda by supporting an appropriate PAC? The corporation needed for that can swiftly be founded in Delaware – oh, wait: the sanctions!

As I mentioned last year, the Russian car maker IzhAvto, which in addition to Russian car models also produces KIAs, had filed for bankruptcy.
Now, in May of this year, the company presented a restructuring plan to creditors that foresees the resumption of industrial activity, i.e. car production, as well as cost cutting and sale of property not related to the primary activity of producing cars. The plan was accepted in a creditors’ meeting on May 4, 2010.
The plan, which was developed by an external entity, also foresees the borrowing of 500 million rubles and furthermore assumes that the company will reach break-even after 18 month and be profitable thereafter. (This info is taken from a press release on the IzhAvto website.)

The first cars were indeed shipped in September 2010 and it will be interesting to see the end-of-year balance sheet of the company.

The latest bin Laden sighting from Dawn (who quotes from CNN):

The newest about the elusive Osama bin Laden, who like Emanuel Goldstein from Orwell’s 1984 is said to exist, but nobody has seen him for so time, is said to live comfortably in north-west Pakistan, close to al-Zawahiri and being protected by locals and some ISI members.

“Nobody in al-Qaeda is living in a cave,” the unnamed senior Nato official reportedly told the network [CNN].

Of course, said “senior Nato official” cannot be named lest the free world’s war on terror fall apart completely. However, we are told this one really, really does exist.

The Turkish intelligence services will be humbled to hear this, as they, not so long ago, claimed that Osama bin Laden had died December 13, 2007 of kidney failure not far from Tora Bora, where the vast bunker complex in the mountains failed to materialise as well.

So does this mean that Iran can wait and Pakistan will be invaded first? I am sure they will let us know in a timely manner, since the public needs to be brainwashed prepared for this news.
